Water-based coatings are the future of finishing. You may not be using them today, but you will be in the next five years.
In our newest video Chris Adams and Tom Monohan of General Finishes demonstrate how to update your existing cabinets with GF Water Based Wood Stain and Dye Stain with a technique called toning. Toning does not require any messy stripping or sanding.
General Finishes does not think light scratches on a door are so significant that it would be necessary for you to strip down the finish.

You can design your own custom glazes, stains, washes, and varnishes with General Finishes intermixable water-based products. **Do not mix General Finishes Glaze Effects with General Finishes Water Based Stain (including Pre-Stain Natural) See tips and recipes below.
For all of the following mixes, GF recommends the following two steps:
Flat Out Flat is safe to recoat with proper cleaning and scuff sanding.
General Finishes does not use a wax such as parafiin, carnauba or PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) that cause adhesion failures in the finish Flat Out Flat.
We do use a very small amount of a different wax (part of the secret sauce) and it is used to improve matting, abrasion and mar resistance.
There are several reasons:
1. The cabinets were not prep cleaned and sanded properly. Sanding and cleaning are an essential part of any refinishing process.
In most cases, you can use a 220 sanding pad to scuff the surface and clean with a 50|50 mix of water and denatured alcohol.
